Our major issue in this country is our two political parties. Our forefathers knew that a two party system would be our downfall and took steps to try to stop this type of politics, and thus anyone who seriously thinks that politics isn't corrupt or slaves to Corporate America hasn't not been paying attention. George Jr. will go down in History as one of the worst administrations in history and I could go on for hours showing why, but my point is that the Obama administration has offered nothing different (besides health reform, granted) and has in fact continued nearly every single Bush program. Obama has almost the same political donors and thus has the same pressures as Bush did. Health reform will turn out to be the most expensive and destructive waste of tax payer money ever. I just wish I could offer a better alternative for other frustrated people, but I can't and those that think that the tea partiers are the future, remember that Sarah Palin is an important figure to them.

Since their inception the Teaparty crowd (not a movement since they do have the numbers or clout) have been “haters not debaters”. In my opinion this is what the small portions of the republican party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” have brought you. They are good at “Follow the Leader” of their dullard leaders, they listen to Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush and Savage and the rest of the Blowhards. Are you surprise at what they do when you know what they think? The world is complicated and most republicans (Hamiliton, Lincoln, Roosevelt) believe that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now its about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. Although some republicans are trying to distant themselves from this fringe most of them are just going along and fanning the flames.

As for the window. This was staged by one of Cantor’s gun buddy, good try at being a victim but I don’t buy it, next.

A little tired of HGTV?

Seriously, though, here in England where everyone loves to blame American mortgage bankers, a little magazine called the Economist published a fantastic survey of the financial meltdown a few weeks ago. Far from being just about mortgages and rich world debt, it highlighted the impact of emerging economies, especially China and their currency peg and large reserves of US dollars. Anything that the fed would do with rates would influence the US market and China differently, and so there was an uncontrollable and vicious circle going on where China's growing economic strength was harming the American economy, but the US is powerless to either tell the Chinese to drop their currency peg or stop buying so many dollar reserves. It was fascinating stuff, I do say.

And now General Petraeus, the only man likely to have a reliable opinion on the matter, says it is more complicated than that. Hm. Watching that congressional enquiry was one of the highlights of my trip. The questioning style was reminiscent of Jeremy Paxman about whom NFAH can probably say more...

Searching for information about the hymn, "In the Garden" for a sermon I am giving in a nursing home and found your blog. Enjoyed the piece about the two Austin Miles's. Thanks for clearing that up, it would have confused my research!

I'll stay away from arguing Iraq politics with you but note that your little anecdote, reminding me of the strangest and silliest game show I can remember from my childhood, evoked an audible laugh over here in jolly old England!

Hello Duane,
My name is Nadine Mesnard Alldridge, and I am the great-granddaughter of Charles Austin Miles, the composer of "In The Garden" that your father-in-law loved so much. I was writing to tell you that Austin Miles, whom you quoted in your piece, is not related to my late relative. Indeed, I have written to him to ask that if this is so, how is it I had never heard of him? He kindly wrote back to say that he is not related to me, but he would be honored if he had been.

It is enjoyable for me to put my ancestors into the search engines and see so many interesting things about them come up. I have several fairly famous ones.

By the way, for a little bit of irony, the gospel song we are speaking of, "In The Garden", was written on a cold, dreary day in a cold, dreary and leaky basement in New Jersey that didn't even have a window in it let alone a view of a garden. I guess you could say it is a tribute to my great-grandfather's faith that he believed it existed, at least in his heart. Nadine Mesnard Alldridge
